Did you know that I have lived in Stockholm for almost 20 years? A city that means so much to me and that I love dearly. Here are my top tips for you right now!
Fotografiska
Fotografiska is one of the world's foremost photography hubs. The museum offers exhibitions by both renowned and up-and-coming photographers. There is also a fantastic restaurant with a magnificent view of the water. I love hanging out here. Be sure to enjoy a lovely lunch. Magical food and a Michelin star.
Nobel Prize Museum
Discover the history of the Nobel Prize and its laureates. The museum has interactive exhibits and inspiring stories about those who have changed the world. I love learning and being enlightened.
ABBA The Museum
A must for all music lovers! Here you can explore ABBA's history, try on stage costumes, sing along to their songs, and even perform virtually with the band. You know ABBA, of course? A pride as a Swede... Benny lives not far from there in his fancy villa along the Djurgård Canal.
It’s incredibly difficult to give the best tips as there are so many! I would probably say that I am a gourmand who loves food and drink. After working with food in various ways for many years, I have become spoiled. Stockholm is full of incredibly lovely places. But to mention a few...
Oaxen Slip
A modern bistro focusing on sustainability and Nordic ingredients. The restaurant is beautifully located by Djurgårdsbrunnsviken and offers both fantastic flavors and a scenic view. Love it!
Tak
A rooftop bar and restaurant with Asian influences and spectacular views over Stockholm's rooftops. Perfect for both brunch and evening drinks. I'm totally sold on Asian fusion and think Frida Ronge is a gem!
Fotografiska Restaurant
As mentioned, the museum's restaurant is also worth mentioning again. With its focus on vegetarian dishes and sustainable ingredients, it has become a favorite among both locals and tourists. Paul Svensson, who was the culinary leader for over 10 years, is also a gem and incredibly talented. Not surprised by the Michelin Guide award!
Södermalm
Södermalm in my heart. Yes, this is where I lived most of my time in Stockholm. "Söder" is known for its bohemian atmosphere. Here you’ll find plenty of vintage shops, trendy cafes, and art galleries. It’s a great place to hang out. I lived in Mosebacke for many years and had my studio and atelier at Bellmansgatan 1. Two of the best places in Stockholm according to me – Mosebacke and Mariaberget (Monteliusvägen offers wonderful views!). And don't miss Nytorget and the surrounding streets. I always enjoyed good wine at Urban Deli. Sankt Paulsgatan is also a favorite. I almost always buy a coffee and breakfast sandwich if I'm in town at St: Pauls Bageri.
Hornstull
Hornstull, another part of Södermalm, is one of the city's most dynamic neighborhoods with cool bars, restaurants, and a fantastic market, Hornstulls Marknad, on weekends. I never lived here but liked it! Often passed by during my runs around Söder...
Can never get enough of this can you...
Dramaten
Sweden's national stage for theater offers a diverse range of plays and performances, and many friends perform here. So I'm often there with bouquets of flowers. It's so beautiful here and the theater itself is also an architectural gem.
Royal Opera House
Actually, at the top of the list and one of the best things to do, in my opinion. Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet. With its incredibly beautiful interior, I quickly escape to another world every time. I love it and "The Opera" is a must. My favorite is the classic ballet Swan Lake.
As you know, I love the sea and one big reason why Stockholm is considered one of the world's most beautiful cities is because there is so much water around. Stockholm's archipelago alone consists of over 30,000 islands, islets, and skerries. There are many ways to explore these, whether you are interested in a day trip or a longer stay. Highly recommended!
- Grinda: A quieter island perfect for nature lovers. Here you’ll find hiking trails, cliffs to swim from, and an inn for food and drink.
- Vaxholm: Often called "the capital of the archipelago," Vaxholm is a charming town with small shops, restaurants, and Vaxholm fortress.
- Fjäderholmarna: The nearest archipelago group to Stockholm, perfect for a quick getaway. Here you’ll find crafts, restaurants, and swimming spots.
- Sandhamn: One of the most famous islands in the archipelago (I love), known for its sailing competitions, lively nightlife, and beautiful sandy beaches.
Hotel At Six
A luxury and design-oriented hotel located at Brunkebergstorg in the heart of Stockholm. Here, modern art and high-class service combine. The hotel has an impressive art collection, an excellent restaurant, and a rooftop bar with a fantastic view of the city. And here you’ll also find TAK which I recommend... Yes, right in the thick of it! Owned by Petter Stordalen, an entrepreneur of note. In fact, we often joke that he is the strawberry king and I am the strawberry queen. Long story...
Hobo Hotel
Located next to Hotel At Six (and also owned by Petter), Hobo is a hipster paradise with an urban and relaxed atmosphere. The rooms are creative and smartly designed with a focus on functionality and style. The hotel also offers a popular bar, co-working space, and regular events.
Ett Hem
An exclusive boutique hotel in a beautiful building from the early 1900s, located in the quiet Lärkstaden area. With a feeling of staying in an elegant private home, Ett Hem offers personalized service, beautifully decorated rooms, and a cozy garden. Love it.
Lydmar Hotel
An elegant and art-inspired hotel by the National Museum with a view over the water. The combination of modern art, music, and relaxed luxury makes Lydmar a popular choice. The restaurant and bar are also favorites among locals and tourists. Next to the Grand Hotel where you can hop over for a good drink at the bar....
