How to: Get rid of your Christmas tree

Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to start saying goodbye to the tree.

But what’s the best way to dispose of a Christmas tree? Today, I’ll share some tips on how to get rid of your tree in the most efficient way.

Get a Tree Bag

I think we’ve all experienced the stress that comes in the days after Christmas, staring at the tree and knowing exactly what will happen as soon as you remove it from the stand. I’m, of course, talking about all the needles that will fall off when you take it outside. But with a good tree bag, this stress can be a thing of the past.
A tree bag is a handy invention you pull over your tree after all the decorations are taken down.
And it really works! Needles all over the house are a thing of the past with a quality tree bag. Ours is even made of biodegradable plastic, so it can be disposed of with other combustible waste.

Check Local Rules and Services

Some municipalities offer free Christmas tree pickup, so check the rules in your area before you load the tree into your car. If your municipality doesn’t have a collection service, they usually have a designated drop-off site.
If they have neither, you should take your tree to the nearest recycling facility and sort it as garden waste.

Chop It Up and Reuse It

But maybe you don’t want to send your tree away. Instead, you might want to recycle it at home!
There are many things you can do with your tree. One option is composting. The trunk isn’t ideal for compost as it decomposes very slowly, but the branches can be added to your compost for good variation and gradual breakdown.
You can saw the trunk into pieces and use it as plant supports or garden decorations. A sturdy trunk is perfect for tomatoes or climbing plants, for example.
If you have a wood chipper at home, you can shred the tree and use the chips as mulch for your garden beds.
Branches can also be used to protect frost-sensitive plants. Even though Christmas is over, winter isn’t. Evergreen branches provide excellent insulation against cold and snow.

Avoid Burning It

While it might seem like a good idea to burn your tree, it’s best to avoid this. A dry Christmas tree burns very well—sometimes too well—and can become dangerous. Additionally, some municipalities don’t allow burning garden waste. Instead, recycle your tree in a more environmentally friendly way.

These are just a few ways to dispose of your tree. Do you have any other tips? Feel free to share them in the comments! :)
